It’s Christmas, so we’re taking things up a notch…

Last month featured the brains behind the Ministry of Sound, Justin Berkmann. This month, we’re flying in original Studio54 resident and one of dance music’s original pioneers (and all-round nice guy) BERT BEVANS for a classic Deep House & Disco session.

As if that’s not enough, we’re also highly elated to secure the services of another pioneer of House Music – NICKY HOLLOWAY. But it’s Xmas, so we’ve gotta do something special. Nicky has got one of the best record collections out there, therefore we’ve asked him to dig through his massive archive and pull out all the stops with a firing rare groove and funk set.

In support are The Speakeasy’s resident Brian Robinson, and Nimble’s very own Madgers.

Santa’s coming twice this year!

Whats-more, entry is free , and there’ll be a load of drinks specials to help get you in the Christmas spirit on what will be the final work day of the year….
10pm until 7am

electric minds have been working hard the last few weeks on their eagerly awaited NYE party and to end what has been a prolific year for electric minds we’re pleased to announce two of our favourite producers as guests.

Joining them will be Appleblim whose appearance for us at Lovebox in the summer was our personal highlight of the day and with his remix of Skudge’s “Realtime” and his forthcoming “Moonlight” release on Vitalik on rotation for weeks, it was an easy decision to invite him to help them see the year out.

Jay Shepheard whose appearance in April opened this years series of loft parties, also returns. Producing a consistently high standard of tracks over the last few years, we’re really excited at the prospect of releasing his new 12” next month and welcoming his live set to the NYE party. In support will be Mark Pavitt & electric minds head honcho, Dolan Bergin.

Representing the 2nd room will be Duff Disco, DJ History’s Name Drop, Paul Crognale and one half of the Moustache Mama’s. They’ll be rolling out the production and sound into a great space a short walk from Shoreditch, details of which will be sent to ticket holders on the week of the party.

£8 to £15 tickets are available via Resident Advisor

Poussez go first with ‘Warlock’, then its ‘Back up Down’ the joint work. Finally, Jesper rounds proceedings off with his solo track ‘Day Dreaming’. All three tracks reaching nicely for the peak-time jugular.

Its been an incredibly busy few years for Poussez – Following Artizan Music’s recent debut at London’s Fabric, Jafar & Maxime have just signed to Neurotraxx Deluxe, 3AM, Pins and Needles, remixed Mateo and Matos and have forthcoming remixes on their material by Claire Ripley and Moodymanc. Firm testament to their increasingly respected niche in the electronic music scene.
In advance of Kidology’s ‘Love Life’ party at Fire in Vauxhall on 1st October – Mark Wilkinson takes some time out from his busy schedule for tea, biscuits and a few questions from Nimble….

1) So, the last Kidology event was a year ago. What have you been up to? I went off to Asia as I was offered a presenting job on a radio station in Phuket Thailand, I had a great 8 months over there and loved my time and the job, however after a while the tropics began to sap my energy somewhat and I realized that I was ready to come back to the UK, and as you can see we’re doing it in style, putting on a great night to show we’re back J

2) What are your plans for Kidology going forward? We’re looking at doing great club nights back in London featuring the strongest DJ line ups we can put together, from there we’ll be looking to take the nights as far as we can worldwide, also back to Ibiza & Festivals are most definitely on our radar

3) What is the philosophy of Kidology, and what can people expect from your parties? For us its all about making people happy, bringing joy to the dancefloor through great music, we love music and we love life, we want people to leave our nights saying ‘we loved it, what an amazing night’, that’s our passion and we’re committed to it.

4) Massive event coming up at Fire in Vauxhall on 1st October, looks like a mini-festival – who have you got lined-up? Ha ha, yeah nice one, we’ve put a lot of effort into this, Harry Choo Choo Romero coming in from NYC is very exciting, Seamus Haji, The Sharp Boys and the rest of the line up are all strong DJs & Producers, we want to go with quality through the whole line up, no weak links.

5) Will the ‘Kidettes’ be there? Ha, sadly no, we’ve kinda moved on from there, ‘that was then and this is now’ and all that, having said that women have always enjoyed my DJ sets long before the Kidettes ever happened so we may hold some interviews on the night, they may return, never say never

6) It’s been a tough few years in the industry, how have you been weathering the storm, and where do you see things heading? Yep we’ve all had a tough time, I’ve just kept believing and doing my thing, and although I feel there are still some tough times ahead I feel we’ll come out of it at some point for sure, and when we do we want to be in the strongest position we can when the fear passes and people start going out on mass again.

7) You’ve been getting busy in the studio again, what can people look forward and any radio follow-up’s to ‘Satellite Of Love’? That would be great, and of course I’m always looking to make records that rock the dancefloor and that can also go to radio at some point. Watch my soundcloud and FB pages for more…

8) Last weekend saw the not-often-seen 20th Birthday of a nightclub in Ministry of Sound. You were one of the original residents – how has this club influenced what you do, and is it still influencing you to this day? We’ve had some amazing nights in MOS, I loved being a resident there and wouldn’t change my time there for anything. To have stood and played music where some of the worlds best DJs have played is a great honor that I am truly grateful for, its also time for us to step up now and make Kidology into a truly strong international brand, so you never know, we may go back to MOS at some point in the future, we will see …

9) How did you get your 1st break, and who would you say is the most influential artist in terms of inspiring you to become a producer and DJ?? My first break was through a friend who was running a night in Maidenhead, my mix tapes were already very popular around London & the home counties so it felt natural to become the resident for him. For me CJ Mackintosh has been the most long term inspiring DJ & Producer, although he hasn’t produced anything for a while now all his productions were class, and as far as a DJ goes he always works the floor, which is where you can find me most of the time I’m not playing myself.

10) Who is your favourite up-and-coming producer and why? I don’t think he’s especially up and coming but I heard DJ Zinc for the first time recently and loved the energy of his set, on the house front I’d say More & Masters (Steve More & Mark Masters) are doing some great tracks & remixes so I’m looking forward to hearing more from them soon.

11) We notice you’re a keen marathon runner and student of personal development, whats the key to life…..and is running the new rock n roll..? I saw an interview with Eminem where he said he had given up drink & drugs and taken up running, the interviewer asked him if he had just replaced one addiction with another, he said yeah that it was possible, and I agree, running really can become addictive and its so healthy, its by far the best way to burn fat and feel great while you’re doing it, running marathons is a big challenge too and I like to challenge myself in all areas, all part of developing oneself J The key to life is…. knowing what love is, and for me love is… total acceptance, of yourself, people close to you and then everyone, try it, you might like it, thank you

BIOGS:

* HARRY CHOO CHOO ROMERO (Bambossa / X-Mix Productions / NYC)*

Harry Romero is a dance music legend, a master of the tougher, dance floor driven House that includes both tech and progressive elements. When it comes to productions and mixes Harry freely admits that it is all about the beats. Like many of the DJs that have come from New York, he has created some of the fattest beats around. These make up the best part of his productions, and grab your attention by slamming you to the ground. Whatever he may say, it’s not just the beats; he has a knack of fusing an element funk and Latin into almost everything he does.

Subliminal Records premier producer HARRY CHOO CHOO ROMERO has raised the bar for prime time dance floor anthems again and again. From his monster club hits ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ (also a top 40 crossover hit on the UK pop charts), ‘Night at the Black’, and ‘Tania’, to his remixes for Maroon 5, Korn, and Basement Jaxx, Harry continues to push the sound forward. Harry’s debut artist album ‘That Beat’ along with his ‘Subliminal Sessions’ compilations delivered his signature sound to the masses. Look for ‘Sessions mixed Harry Choo Choo Romero’ out now on Ministry of Sound Recordings and his new singles ‘Lifting Me High’ on red hot UK indie Cr2 Records and ‘Cumbia’ on his newly re-launched Bambossa label. Harry’s remix of Hardrive ‘Deep Inside’ reached the number 1 download spot on Beatport in 2009.

* SEAMUS HAJI (Big Love / Strictly Rhythm) *

Seamus Haji began his DJing career at the tender age of 16 with a South London Soundsystem playing a mixture of early House, Soul and Hip Hop and soon secured his first residency at The Satellite. Following this, he became a regular fixture at the likes of MOS, Code, Bed and Pacha, London, also enjoying numerous residencies around the globe, including four years at Pacha, Ibiza.

He has also had multiple creative personalities over the years: Big Bang Theory, Mekkah and ‘11th Dimension and more recently Haji & Emanuel, resulting in the smash hits, “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life”(the remake being signed to Apollo and going Top 15 in the UK National Charts and being feted by the likes of Pete Tong as the next big thing!), “Weekend” and “Take Me Away”, as well as the recently completed single “The Pressure” featuring Beverley Knight and Bryan Chambers

Seamus has become synonymous with quality, his DJ sets never disappoint, he’s a technical wizard and his productions are phenomenal. With DJ requests and remixes going off you get a sense when someone’s time has come, and for Seamus that time is now.

* MARK WILKINSON (Kidology London) *

Mark has deejayed in over 65 countries, produced with the world’s greatest music makers, had chart topping success, and shaped half a dozen production monikers along the way; and this is a mere drop in the ocean of his career. It was during this time that his most current and probably most popular guise ‘Dab Hands’ was born. Dab Hands has had success for remix duties on Lou Reed’s ‘Satellite Of Love’, which made it into the Top 10 of the UK national charts; with ‘Supergood’ – a cross over hit on Virgin / Ten Records in 2005, and ‘DYOT’, which was later released on Gusto Records, was an ‘essential new tune’ for Radio 1’s Pete Tong.

Mark gave his own name a working in May 2007 by releasing ‘Playground Stuff’ on Phonetic Recordings as his first ever release under his own name.

Moving forward into 2010 Mark released some great new music including his remix of a classic ‘Mark Wilkinson Vs Degrees of Motion- Shine On’, alongside collaborations with Danny Rampling, KKlass, Steve Edwards, Redsoul & Andrea Love, Paul Jackson, MJ White, Grace Under Pressure & Danny Marx.

Now in 2011 Mark has spent the last eight months in Phuket, Thailand for a whole new challenge, taking on 4 different dance orientated evening shows a week on 91.5FM Phuket Island Radio broadcasting across the island and also to the world.

* TREVOR FUNG *

Trevor Fung began his DJing career at 18 and was quickly earning the respect and reputation for his taste and knowledge of both UK and American Soul Funk and Jazz. In 1984 through his European tastes and connections Trevor was invited to play at Amnesia in Ibiza to spin his now mixed style of dance music, which complimented the much-respected resident Amnesia DJ “Alfredo”. On Trevor’s return and throughout the mid eighties he teamed up with long time friend Paul Oakenfold to set up a club called “The Funhouse” playing similar sounds from his Ibiza experience alongside the popular Hip Hop and Go-Go sounds of that time. This was followed by the formation of his infamous “The Project Club” with also club resident DJ, Carl Cox. The Project Club was strongly influenced @ that time by the new sounds coming in from the Detroit and Chicago. HOUSE MUSIC!

In the summer of ‘87 Trevor took “The Project Club” concept to Ibiza where together with Ian St Paul he opened Bar in San Antonio, playing to a very mixed crowd that was attracted by the then unusual combination of Hip Hop, Indie, Acid and House music Trevor had incorporated into his unique style. This later became known within the music press as “Balearic Beat”. In 1988 Trevor’s influence over fellow friends and DJ’s ignited a chain reaction in London. Nicky Holloway, Paul Oakenfold, Johnny Walker and Danny Rampling were all early visitors to Trevor’s nights both at The Project Club and Amnesia and were inspired to change the face of the London Club Scene by launching seminal nights such as The Future, Spectrum, Shoom, The Land Of Oz, Rage, Enter The Dragon and Trip.

He’s graced the stages of the global dance floors and referred by the music press as one of the few original DJ’s who’s vision created the dance scene as it is today.

Watch this space as a new and very exciting chapter is just beginning.

* ROB FUNG *

I am very lucky and fortunate to have the opportunity to love music at an early age, I gained that experience from Trevor who also loved the sweet sound of music, I would watch him carefully watch him and later became his understudy.

Later I would become like every other musician start in small Bars/Venues and start mixing up tracks that we all love today. I started playing the good old Soul, Jazz-Funk and later moved with the musical movement.

I then had a big break working in a London clubs with would proof to be a life changing experience and would hold many happy memories for me and lots of clubbers. I had worked with the Top and Best DJ’s in the business and seen some beautiful cities around the world. My sets now consists of a mixture from Balearic, House and Jazz funk with lots of twists…

My recent projects is working with some talented producers and S.U.M Recordings, Producing tracks for release at a later date.
We know we’ve kept you waiting so long, but UTBD always loves you. Even when you hog all the duvet. That’s why we’ve pulled it out the bag (pulled the bag out?) for our Midsummer Special with Freerange / Dark Energy Recordings deep house producer du jour… SHUR-I-KAN headlining the next party..

Yes, UPTOWNBOOGIEDOWN returns to London Saturday July 30th bringing you the man behind some truly essential hits the last few years (‘One Night in Tokyo‘ or ’Stringkiller‘ anyone?), Shur-i-kan is also part of the improvisational super-group The Bays alongside long-term friend and Freerange label buddy, Jimpster…

Taking a brief pause from East Village until the Autumn, we move to the lovely japanese-inspired Fluid. Housed on the same road as Fabric, Fluid is an intimate 300 capacity space over two floors. So here’s the chance to cosy up close and personal..

In the basement, SHUR-I-KAN joins your huggable ressies POUSSEZ, whilst our very own EIGHTBITRATE, fresh from Holic and Muak, headlines upstairs alongside Artizan compadre W10, london DJ Nick Ronin, aka winner in our Podcast comp and man behind the Basis parties. We also have POJ of mixed Grill fame, cooking up a storm and promising UTBD newcomer Owen Howells, who has so impressed us with his up and coming productions. He’ll be setting the scene and easing us all in to a delicious, cosmic disco trouble-bath. Rounding proceedings off, our lethal percussionist Lil Dom and his magical hands of steel…get some!
